Was Chicken Little Right?

Is the Sky Really Falling?

The original Chicken Little story is a very old fairytale about a chicken walking in the woods who had an acorn (a nut from an oak tree) fall on her head. She panicked and in her fear, she convinced many of the friends that the sky was falling. They all ran to announce the the truth to the king, but in their fear and panic, along the way, they lost their cool, so when sly fox came along, he easily conned them away form their journey, and he ate them all for lunch.

Well, the truth is that Chicken Little was almost right. She had one piece of her discovery backwards. The sky isn't falling, it's the other way around. Humans are throwing the Earth up into the sky. (throwing carbon into the sky in the form of carbon dioxide) And that, my friend, is much more deadly than the sky, itself, falling. Here's what Chicken little was about to discover and disclose:

What If You Are Wrong most-often-ignored question . . .

Is It Possible that I Could Be Wrong?

If you are discounting
the seriousness of the Global Climate
Changes, here's something you need to consider:

We hold significantly different views of the seriousness of Global Climate Change. Is it possible that, at this very moment, one of us could be being wrong? We can't both be right. We are both presently making decision based upon what we believe is right. This brings up two critical questions for each of us to ask ourselves:

** Are the actions I am taking (or not taking) reversible? Are my mistakes fixable? If I am wrong, can I change my actions and produce a more desirable result?

** What are the consequences, what are the results of my actions (or lack of actions)?

Have you ever been wrong about something? While you were being wrong, did you know that you were being wrong? Of course not. The essence of being wrong is not knowing that one is wrong.

Consider these three mistakes:

** You pack your bags for a journey and you plan on taking three extra pairs of socks . Later at your destination, you discover that you miscounted and actually have four pairs of socks in your suitcase. This mistake is easily reversible and the consequences are negligible.

** I'm deeply concerned about Global Climate Change, so I take whatever actions I can to clean up the environment. I make personal changes such as recycling my trash and using energy saving products such as the new, low-power light bulbs and low-water-flush toilets. My company stops polluting the river. My company to reduces its carbon footprint by fifty percent.

Later, I learn that Global Climate Change was just a tree-hugger hippy fairytale. My mistakes are all reversible although I have no need and no desire to do so. The consequences are all beneficial for myself, for my fellow humans and for the environment.

** You discount the overwhelming evidence pointing to the disasters of Global Climate Change and as a result of your belief, you simply live your life as you have in the past. If you are wrong, your mistake is NOT fixable. The consequences are devastating, deadly and irreversible. Everybody loses!

If you are wrong, your children and grandchildren get to live their lives in a drastically devastated environment. The experience much grief and misery and die early deaths -- all because you refused to examine the evidence and refused make the necessary changes. Is that the legacy you want to be remembered for?
