Once the carbon and oxygen are separated, the oxygen can be safely released into the atmosphere.  Oxygen already makes up about 21% of the atmosphere, so the amount released in this process, when compared to the amount already present, would be relatively small.    The carbon, in the very stable form known as charcoal, can be ground up and mixed with the soil where it will stay for years and be either harmless or helpful in making the soil more productive.    

Trees and plants do that all day long every day, whenever they are in daylight, so how do we encourage or duplicate what they do on a scale large enough to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere?   Can we employ Mother Nature to do this for us on a grander scale than it is presently happening?   Those who propose applying the the concept called, "biochar" think so.  

What are the advantages of applying the biochar process?

Opponents of Biochar

Opponents of Biochar do not take issue with the process, itself.   They are concerned about how it may be misapplied and the resultant damage of misuse -- that productive land will be diverted to biochar -- that indigenous cultures may be sacrificed in the process.

An Application of Biochar

Consider this possibility:   Given the urgency with which we must reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, common sense dictates: 

1)  ***   That we implement the 100 million dollar reward, described on Page One of this topic, and 

2)  ***   That we begin using this process a soon as possible.   

The question then becomes:   How to we implement the program?

Here's One Possibility:

Suppose we found a location where ocean water could be piped to a flat area in a hot climate where the land is presently of little value for human use.   (Such as the Mojave desert of southern California where thousands of square miles of land are presently unused except by the American military to test their weapons of war.)   The water pumps could be driven by solar or wind or ocean wave generated power.   Once the water arrived at the site, it would be placed in large flat, covered,  evaporation tanks that would act similar to a  moon shiner's still that collected the evaporated water.  The evaporate water could then be used to water the plants in the biomass growing area.  The plants could then be harvested and turned into charcoal.   When biochar is no longer needed, the area could be used for orchards and/or other agricultural crops.   Reference:
